Where: Greece: Thessaloniki: Old city walls
When: Anytime between April-June or September-October… The winters can be quite cold and the summers are way too hot to enjoy exploring the city
Drink: As they aren’t a lot of bars in this area. Buy a nice cool drink at the local kiosks before you walk up.
Get there: There are busses that take you there and there is also a bus that makes a tour around all the big monuments of the city… I however enjoy the walk from the beachfront up to the old part of the city. It looks far but its really just a 30-45 min walk, tiring cause it goes up the hill but enjoyable. I love starting at the water… Walking through the busy city center with its high buildings (passing the “Navarinou” and the “Rotonda”, other great ancient monuments) and slowly watching the city turning into a village with narrow roads small houses with brick roofs and almost no cars. The reward is the stunning view as you get to the top.
Price: Free
Do: Watch the sunset! On a clear day you can even see mount Olympus… There are a couple of taverns with rooftops where you can also have dinner at the same time if you’re hungry.
My tip: Take a different trip down and visit the old gardens of the Pasha from Ottoman times. You’re gonna see some really old odd water fountain installations. Walk on the outside part of the city wall and you will find them.
